Editing Leads To Weird Talents…
I have a weird talent that I feel only has happened due to being an Editor. I technically have two but one of them started before I edited and even though it relates to editing I cannot credit it.
Hello, my name is Holly and I am a Video Editor and Motion Graphics Designer, another weird talent I have is that I am a really fast learner and have taught myself a lot of instruments including the banjo and clarinet.
Let’s talk about the first one. Even though it has developed even more since I have become an Editors I have to say it was a party trick I had at University. I have always been very good at guessing what a song was after three seconds of hearing it. When I used to go clubbing with my friend I used to freak her out by telling her what the next song was as I would hear the beats being mixed in before the song even dropped. Some were really hidden; it used to be like a magic trick!
As I have gone into editing, this skill has developed and weirdly improved, with royalty free music. When you start to truly listen to music in shows you start to hear these songs in a lot of places. For example the theme tune for Travel Man. I always thought that this song was made for this show - nope, it is a royalty free track that is used a lot in television. I have heard it in everything from American cooking shows to UK reality shows. It is so weird how many shows use it.
Also, when I hear certain commercial music, I can either visualise a potential edit I could do to it or even remember shot from shot an edit I have done to it in the past. It is really random and very weird when an edit comes up.
Another weird thing that you do as an editor is that you watch a show and can tell when it has been edited in AVID. For example, when I watched Jamie Oliver’s 15 Minute Meals, I could tell straight away as I end up recognising certain transitions that are used throughout.
They are such random talents to have and whilst it is fun to be able to do these it also means that it can ruin the way you watch television or social media videos.
