Storytelling is a key part of being a Video Editor and working within the broadcast industry. Here are a few examples of just a few edits that I have worked on where storytelling has been a key factor.
Britain’s Favourite Forests, This Morning
This was a series for This Morning highlighting the magic of some of the forests within the United Kingdom. The aim of the edit was to create a compelling narrative that in under five minutes delves into the history and the present of the trees of the New Forest. The main aim was to make sure that as much footage could be utilised as there was many different shots on the B roll that were beautiful and really showcased the forest in the best way possible.
Human Or Machine - The Phoenix Remix
In my spare time, I run an Entertainment website called The Phoenix Remix aimed at promoting the UK Improv and comedy scene. In 2019, the topic of AI being used in theatre was highly under-represented so I took it upon myself to make a short film to highlight it. I collaborated with Improbotics and filmed over 2 hours of footage to make a 10 minute short film going behind the scenes. I also created social media shorts and had interviews for my website to reach more audiences.
Change & Check: Breast Cancer Campaign, Lorraine
I have had the privilege to work on Lorraine’s Breast Cancer Campaign since it’s launch. This particular edit was to highlight Lorraine and the choir heading to Westminster to gain signatures from MPs and help with promoting the cause. The key for this edit was to create a short film that highlighted the events of the day and pull out key sots for a variety of political parties to firstly highlight the importance and secondly to make sure that there was no political bias.
Morocco Earthquake - Good Morning Britain
Working in live broadcast means that you have to work to extremely tight deadlines to tell a story, especially if that news is breaking. This was one of the many breaking news stories that I have worked on over the years. It is important to keep it factual and make sure that the footage is constantly updated to make sure that you are providing the most recent content for the audience. Creating stories in this environment means that you work efficiently to bring a narrative to life whilst also being informative and abiding to Ofcom regulations.
